📰 Headlines
-
The Detroit Lions hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, where he joins after spending three seasons (2023–25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Over his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards, while TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2024–25) and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025.
-
Wide receiver is Detroit's least pressing need in the draft — Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams have been among the NFL's best duos at the position over the last two seasons, and Isaac TeSlaa capped his rookie campaign strong.
-
The Lions have adequately addressed safety this offseason, but none of those moves should stop Lions GM Brad Holmes from selecting a safety in the first round if there are concerns about the long-term futures of either Brian Branch (Achilles) or Kerby Joseph (knee).
-
The Lions' 2026 draft class is a mix of calculated risks and long-term investments, with reports suggesting selections of Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor in the first round to taking a chance on versatile edge rusher Derrick Moore and nose tackle Dontay Coreleone.

📊 Season Watch
Theme D — Offensive Coordinator Impact
Expectations are rising for the Lions heading into the 2026 season, and much of that optimism centers around quarterback Jared Goff and new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, with a proven veteran under center and a fresh offensive voice calling plays. Petzing's offensive philosophy leans heavily on versatility, pre-snap motion, and creating mismatches — elements that could unlock new layers in Detroit's offense, particularly through play-action and movement-based concepts with bootlegs, rollouts, and layered route combinations. Petzing has shown a willingness to adapt his system to fit his players, which could benefit key playmakers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders: 27 Years Since the Legend's Surprise Retirement
Nearly three decades ago, in the summer of 1999, Detroit Lions fans were left in shock when Barry Sanders announced his sudden retirement, just one year removed from a 2,053-yard rushing season and on the cusp of becoming the NFL's all-time leading rusher. The Lions were 5–11 in Sanders' last season and appeared light years away from being a legitimate contender; the team had not won a playoff game in any of his final seven seasons. One of the game's most electrifying runners, Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989–1998), becoming the first running back ever to do so. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
