On July 1, 1999, Barry Sanders had amassed 15,269 yards rushing when he retired after the 1998 season, second all-time to Chicago's Walter Payton. But the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner was also just the third person to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1997. One of the game's most electrifying runners, Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989-1998), and he was the first running back ever to do so.

Sanders has since patched things up with the Lions, rejoining the organization in a paid role as a team ambassador in 2017, and they dedicated a bronze statue to him outside Ford Field in September 2023. His legacy endures as the franchise rebuilds its offense around a new offensive line—a reminder that elite running back play requires elite protection.
