🦁 Top Story
The 2026 NFL Draft kicks off tonight at 8 p.m. EDT in Pittsburgh, with Round 1 expected to conclude in roughly three hours. The Lions have a solid roster heading into draft weekend, which gives GM Brad Holmes plenty of flexibility with the No. 17 overall pick. An early run on offensive tackles could put the Lions in a tough spot, but Holmes must use this weekend to acquire at least two or three starting players who will give the team production and great value, and given his reputation as a very good college evaluator and propensity for moving around the draft, he'll have more than enough opportunities to improve the roster.

📊 Season Watch
Offensive Coordinator Impact (Theme D)
The Detroit Lions announced the hiring of Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator after he spent the previous three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Over his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards; under Petzing's guidance, Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2025 after leading all NFL tight ends in receptions (126) and receiving yards (1,239), while his 126 receptions established a single-season NFL record among tight ends.
At 38, Petzing was the offensive coordinator in Arizona the last three seasons, and there are schematic elements to his offense that make him a good fit in Detroit, most importantly his commitment to having a solid rushing attack. Petzing's influence could help Detroit generate more explosive plays by incorporating more creative route combinations and misdirection, allowing the Lions to stretch defenses vertically while still maintaining their efficient, ball-control identity. Petzing has shown a willingness to adapt his system to fit his players rather than forcing them into rigid roles, which could benefit key playmakers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta.

Barry Sanders: 27 Years Since the Greatest Rushing Season
Twenty-seven years have passed since Barry Sanders authored the most dominant rushing campaign in Lions franchise history. The elusive rusher ran for over 1,000 yards in every season of his career, topping out at 2,053 rushing yards in 1997. Sanders won the 1997 NFL MVP Award and rushed for 184 yards against the New York Jets, setting an NFL record of 14-straight 100-yard rushing games while securing his only 2,000-yard rushing season.
The Detroit Lions player with the most rushing yards in franchise history is Barry Sanders with 15,269 yards, while Billy Sims ranks second with 5,106 rushing yards. 🔮 What to Watch
-
Draft Floor Behavior: Monitor which offensive tackles and edge rushers come off the board in the first 16 picks; an early run could force Holmes to trade down or pivot.
-
Holmes' Movement: Watch for any trades up or down from pick 17; his history suggests he won't hesitate to move around if the right player or value presents itself.
-
Post-Round 1 Depth: While the Lions have nine picks in the upcoming draft, only two of those will come in the first 100 selections, so days 2 and 3 will be critical for addressing secondary needs and depth on the offensive line.
